Associate Planner


The Associate Planner is involved with a wide variety of planning duties ranging from entry-level projects to moderately complex.  These responsibilities include research and data collection, preparation of documents in compliance with the California Environmental Quality Act and National Environmental Policy Act, policy and regulatory documents, staff reports, designing and developing plans, and performing technical analyses on a variety of projects.


  • Moderate to moderately-advanced understanding of planning, land use, and State and Federal environmental planning laws;
  • Preparation of a variety of planning documents (e.g. environmental documents, portions of general plans, specific plans, and development codes);
  • Assist clients in defining project objectives and goals, and developing plans through analysis of data;
  • Serve as client liaison;
  • Familiarity with CA planning laws, annexations, and understanding of local code and land use principals
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
  • May participate in preparation of proposal writing
  • May manage planning projects
  • May focus on one or more specific aspects of the planning field (i.e. CEQA, site design, processing, etc.)


  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of two years experience;
  • A master’s degree in planning or related field may substitute for one (1) year of planning experience (related fields: Geography, Biology, Geology, Environmental Science, Architecture, Landscape Architecture).
  • Possess strong time management and problem solving skills;
  • Excellent written skills with attention to detail;
  • Solid working knowledge of Word, Excel, and Outlook (Microsoft Suite) programs, as well as ability to find information using the Internet;
  • Ability to work in a team environment and independently;
  • Possess strong organizational skills.
  • Basic working knowledge of California Environmental Quality Act, National Environmental Policy Act, other state and federal environmental laws and regulations, California Planning and Zoning Law, and related statutes is desirable;
  • Basic knowledge related to site design, planning principles, and/or agency procedure is desirable;
  • Valid California Driver License and available transportation;
  • American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification is desirable.
